As “Crested Butte’s Original Saloon,” the Wooden Nickel carries a legacy that demands respect. Our challenge was to honor that heritage while thoughtfully evolving the space for today’s community. With many local establishments adhering strictly to Victorian-saloon tropes, differentiation became our North Star.
Our design intent is to show locals that we cherish the Nickel’s history while guiding it toward a more relevant, contemporary expression. This evolution began with a deep dive into the refreshed brand identity, a “voice” that is more personal and authentic than a standard period piece.
While the historic bar and buffalo remain the undisputed heroes of the narrative, we’ve layered in a more rugged, rustic, and approachable vibe. Drawing inspiration from legendary spots like the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and Woody Creek Tavern, the new concept balances authenticity with a renewed energy. It is a space that feels deeply rooted, yet playfully reimagined for its next great chapter.
